Investing in People. Oceanlinx is proud to be a ‘Saving our Planet!’ sponsor of ‘A Kids Guide to Climate Change’. The DVD resource Kid’s Guide to Climate Change aims to educate young people about climate change in a way which will bring about positive change. Targeted at 6-16 year olds, Kid’s Guide to Climate Change will include engaging material written by young people and will be presented in a relevant, entertaining and inspiring way. This resource will be available from the Kids Guide to Climate Change website. Kid’s Guide to Climate Change is an initiative created by Parrys Raines, a young girl concerned about her generation not being well informed about climate change. Parrys commenced this project when she was 11 years old because she believes there is little information in a simple format that educates children about climate change with explanations of what children can do in their everyday lives that can make a difference. She also believes that by producing a DVD and delivering it through a website ensures the information can be obtained easily by children and their teachers. After conducting research (by interviewing children of various ages) Parrys found that children wanted to do things to help the environment but were not sure what they could do. As Youth Ambassador for WWF-Australia (since 2007), Parrys is a passionate and committed young environmentalist. With the support of Sea World, she completed a documentary on the plight of polar bears, she travelled to Borneo to film and learn about orang-utans for a documentary and she was nominated for Young Citizen of the Year for 2007 and 2008. Parrys also represented Australia at the United Nations International Children's Conference on the Environment in Norway in June 2008. There were 750 children from 105 countries aged between 10-14 years and Parrys was one of 20 people who had been selected to speak at the conference and she is an inspiration to say the least. Parrys has received letters of support from MP Peter Garrett, Ms Sharon Bird, Dr Brendan Nelson, Senators Bob Brown and Christine Milne and Australia’s Ambassador to the UN, Robert Hill.
